Jakarta, Indonesia, October 18th, 2025 – In a recent episode of the Synergy SOS Podcast, Ms. Betty Tambunan, representative of Garuda Yamato Steel (GYS), shared how the company is redefining Indonesia’s steel industry through Japanese innovation, sustainability, and safety. Hosted by Mr. Ismet Natakarmana of Synergy Group, the session explored how GYS’s new Earthquake-Resistant Plus Steel combines durability, cost efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
From Gunung Garuda to Garuda Yamato Steel
Formerly known as Gunung Garuda, GYS has long been a trusted name in structural steel. In 2024, the company was acquired by Yamato Group, a Japanese leader with operations in the United States, Thailand, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and Bahrain, expanding its presence to Indonesia. With this acquisition, Yamato brought decades of expertise in advanced steel technology, including the development of earthquake-resistant products following Japan’s 1995 Kobe earthquake.
“Indonesia and Japan share similar geographical risks, both being in the Pacific Ring of Fire,” said Ms. Betty. “That’s why our focus is to provide safer and stronger steel for Indonesian infrastructure.”
Innovating with Earthquake-Resistant Plus Steel
Garuda Yamato Steel specializes in hot-rolled structural steel sections such as IWF, H-Beam, Angle Bars, and UNP profiles, in which these materials are essential for columns, frameworks, and transmission towers. Resistant Plus Steelarthquake-Resistant Plus Steel, offers up to 20% cost savings while maintaining superior safety and strength.
“Our innovation came from listening to the construction ecosystem, which includes project owners, contractors, and fabricators,” Ms. Betty explained. “They needed products that are safe and cost-effective, and that’s what Earthquake-Resistant Plus Steel delivers.”
Advanced Technology and Sustainability
Before Yamato’s entry, most steel producers in Indonesia used SS-grade technology from the late 1930s–1940s. After the 1995 Kobe earthquake, Japan developed SN-grade steel, designed specifically for seismic resistance, a standard now adopted by GYS.
The company also leads in green production, using Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology to recycle old steel into premium materials. “We source and process everything locally,” Ms. Betty added. “That’s why our TKDN (local content) is among the highest in the market.”
Building for the Future
With its plant based in West Cikarang, Garuda Yamato Steel continues to support Indonesia’s goal of safer, more sustainable construction. As Ms. Betty concluded,
“Indonesia lies in an earthquake-prone zone. So whenever you build, remember Garuda Yamato Steel, the pioneer of Earthquake-Resistant Plus Steel, which ensures safety and saves 20% in cost.”.
