Garuda Yamato Steel Launches High-Tensile Steel/Baja Tahan Gempa PLUS

Since 2024, Garuda Yamato Steel or “GYS” has been a pioneer by launching seismic grade steel based on Japanese technology in the Indonesian steel market.

As the modern construction industry develops, raw materials that are safer (more safety) and more efficient (cost saving) are needed. PLUS Earthquake Resistant Steel or High Tensile Steel from GYS comes as a solution to these demands.

Garuda Yamato Steel (GYS) announced on Thursday, February 27, 2025, this latest innovation at a launching event at the Sheraton Gandaria City Ballroom. Attended by hundreds of participants from the steel and construction ecosystem.

This development marks an important milestone in Indonesia’s steel industry, as GYS becomes the first domestic steel mill to produce high-strength, earthquake-resistant IWF/H-beams. Earthquake Resistant Steel is renowned for its superior strength and durability.

The newly launched High Tensile Earthquake Resistant IWF/H-Beams have a yield point (a measure of steel strength) of 345 MPa, about 40% stronger compared to standard H-beams available in Indonesia, which typically have a yield point of 245 MPa.

According to GYS, High Tensile steel not only provides better seismic resistance and structural safety, but also contributes to cost efficiency in construction. By using stronger steel, builders can reduce the amount of steel required, leading to potential construction cost savings of up to 20% while ensuring projects are completed on time.

It is a dual-standard steel that meets the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) for JIS SN490B and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard for ASTM A572 Gr.50. In addition, GYS remains committed to sustainability, with this high-strength High Tensile steel produced from recycled steel waste and low emissions due to the smelting process with Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology.

By introducing high-performance earthquake-resistant steel in an earthquake-prone country like Indonesia, GYS aims to protect communities while supporting sustainable economic development. This initiative is in line with the country’s growing need for resilient infrastructure, ensuring better structural integrity in high risk zones.

In addition to launching PLUS/High Tensile Earthquake Resistant Steel, GYS also signed a contract with iForte Energi Nusantara, a local solar panel company, to install a rooftop solar power system with a peak capacity of 6,506 kilowatts (kWp) at their Cikarang factory. This initiative affirms GYS’ commitment to green energy solutions, further strengthening their role in supporting a responsible and sustainable steel industry.

With these strategic advancements, GYS continues to set new benchmarks in the Indonesian steel manufacturing sector, reinforcing their dedication to innovation, safety and sustainability.
